    Isle of Wight Academy honors winter 2024 student-athletes

    The following student-athletes were honored at Isle of Wight Academy’s Winter 2024 Athletic Awards Wednesday.

    From the Chargers’ varsity girls basketball team, senior classmates Kate Holland was offensive player of the year and Reese Upton was defensive player of the year. Kaitlyn Springle also was named most valuable player. The team capped a 13-3 year with a 46-26 loss to Hampton Roads Academy in the first round of the VISAA Division II tournament in Newport News.

    Eighth-grader Brady Cooke was named MVP of the junior varsity boys basketball team.

    Senior Evan Bracey and junior Grayson Brock were named Co-MVPs of the varsity boys basketball squad.

    Junior Jason Chapman was defensive player of the year and Bracey, offensive player of the year.

    The school’s indoor track team had two honorees. Eighth-grader Annabel Rogers set a school record with an 8:02, besting a record set by former track star Hannah Edwards. Among boys runners, sophomore Trent Harrison set a school record at 55 meters with time of 7:08. Junior Jayce Joyner won the team’s “Heart of the Charger” award.

    From varsity cheerleading, junior Ariel Hawkins was recognized as MVP; Mackenzie Lenig was voted most improved and senior Erin Goodrich won the coaches’ award.

    The school’s baseball and softball teams spring into action this week. Baseball opened its season Tuesday at Kenston Forest. They travel to Greenbrier Christian Thursday and trek to Broadwater Academy Friday.

    Softball had a season-opening tournament canceled by rain this past weekend and opens its season at Broadwater Friday.
