Tribal leaders on the coast call for action to return sea otters to Oregon
Leaders of two federally recognized Oregon coastal Indian tribes have called upon U.S. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland to “take all appropriate actions” to direct the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) to return sea otters — known to tribal ancestors as Xulh-t’ush, Giye’we, or Ela-ke’ — to the Oregon coast within the next five years. The Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians (CTCLUSI) and the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians (CTSI) have sent letters to Haaland. In the letters, Bradley...
Highway 6 cable install nearly complete
After delays caused by rocky soil conditions, contractors from Astound Broadband expect to finish laying a section of fiberoptic cable along the path of Highway 6 by the end of July. That will complete a terrestrial backhaul route between Pacific City and Hillsboro ahead of the scheduled fall arrival of a transpacific, submarine cable originating in Singapore. Contractors began working to install the cable along Highway 6 between last year,...

U.S. Senator Ron Wyden said today he is leading Senate colleagues including U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley in calling on Postmaster General DeJoy and the U.S. Postal Service to share their plans to accommodate high volumes of mail expected in the upcoming 2024 general election in Oregon and nationwide. “In 2020, the Postal Service overcame a series of challenges, including the onset of a global pandemic, to fulfill this critical mission. Impressively, it delivered 97.9% of ballots within three days, even as a record number of...
Two ways to reduce childhood hunger in Oregon this summer
The Summer Food Service Program offers free, nutritious meals at sites all over the state and the Summer EBT program provides $120 per eligible child for groceries. Nearly 30 million children participate in USDA’s school breakfast and lunch programs on an average school day. When school is out for the summer, kids lose access to these healthy meals, but they still need nutritious food to grow healthy and strong. This year, there are now two programs in Oregon that will improve access until school starts...

Andrew Miller, the Chief Executive Officer of Stimson Lumber Company, has announced that the wood products company will be investing $50 million into a new, high-speed sawmill line at its facility in Forest Grove, Oregon. The investment at the 95-year-old sawmill marks a significant upgrade and commitment to future operations at the facility and increased potential for private timber owners seeking new market opportunities for smaller-dimension timber, Miller says. Starting...
Study: Pacific cod can’t rely on coastal safe havens for protection during marine heat waves
During recent periods of unusually warm water in the Gulf of Alaska, young Pacific cod in near shore safe havens where they typically spend their adolescence did not experience the protective effects those areas typically provide, a new Oregon State University study found. Instead, during marine heat waves in 2014-16 and 2019, young cod in these near shore “nurseries” around Kodiak Island in Alaska experienced significant changes in their abundance, growth rates and diet, with researchers estimating that only the largest 15-25% of the island’s...

Letter: Manzanita water controversies
Who knew that water bills would be so controversial? The complaints were just complaints in the beginning. Now that a referendum is going forward, it will cost us time and money. And really, for what purpose? The City of Manzanita approved a new rate structure in July to catch up on nine years of inflation. The plan also rewarded water conservation, and we went to monthly billing. Complaints about this...

A group of five county representatives worked with three representatives from the governor’s office to hammer out the options, landing on reducing contributions to either the counties and special districts or Oregon Department of Forestry, or moving school districts in the...
Letter: Appreciation for Oregon State Grange Convention
Recently, from June 14 to 20, the Oregon State Grange convention came to our town. The Oregon granges get together every year in a different county or district. The Oregon State Grange convention was last held in Tillamook County in 1915, when Tillamook County had more than the three granges that are here now. I’ve recently learned about some of what it takes to arrange and get ready for an Oregon State Grange convention. Wow…after selecting a host location, the local granges are responsible for...
