    Community foundation awards grants aimed at improving the quality of life

    NEW PHILADELPHIA − The Tuscarawas County Community Foundation has awarded nearly $950,000 in grants this year to more than 40 area nonprofit organizations and governmental entities to improve the quality of life for area residents.

    Twelve of the grant awards were made from the foundation’s general fund, 13 grants were provided by the Max T. and Erma Miller Donor Advised Fund, three grants each from the Dr. Leslie Harrold Community Fund, the AAA Tuscarawas County Donor Advised Fund, and the Dennison Community Fund.

    The foundation grants, which totaled more than $105,000, included: Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital Cancer Center, $33,333.33 (first year of a three-year grant); Indian Valley Local Schools, $5,927.49 for auditorium sound and lighting upgrades; Little Theater of Tuscarawas County, $10,748.32 for emergency HVAC replacement; Multi-County Advanced Manufacturing Corridor project, $5,000 for a matching grant for equipment; Newcomerstown NOW, $4,691.95 for creation of a Pocket Park; New Philadelphia Youth Soccer, $5,000 for soccer field improvements; The Full Life Center, $3,530.04 for office equipment and materials; Tuscarawas Clinic for the Working Uninsured, $5,000 for TUFF Bags partnership for distribution of oral hygiene products; Tuscarawas County Literacy Coalition, $1,000 for the One Book, One Community project; Tuscarawas Philharmonic, $1,000 for a summer guest artist workshop; Tuscarawas County YMCA, $15,000 for new HVAC unit for the chapel area; United Way of Tuscarawas County, $15,000 in support of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library reading program.

    The 13 grants from the Max T. and Erma Miller Donor-Advised Fund totaled $245,000 and were presented to: Trumpet in the Land, $25,000; Rainbow Connection, $10,000; Dress-A-Child, $25,000; Community Hospice, $10,000; New Philadelphia High School Quaker Foundation, $10,000; RTY Park Place Teen Center, $55,000; Buckeye Career Center Foundation, $10,000; Tuscarawas County Council for Church and Community, $10,000; Grace Lutheran Church of Dover, $25,000; Stark and Muskingum Lakes Chapters of the American Red Cross, $15,000; United Way of Tuscarawas County, $35,000; Salvation Army, $5,000; and the Tuscarawas County Historical Society, $10,000.

    A total of $799,225 was distributed from the Dr. Leslie S. Harrold Community Fund with $396,200 going to Community Hospice, $198,100 to the Salvation Army and $204,925 to various education foundations in the area for student scholarships.

    Three community grants were provided by the AAA Tuscarawas County Donor Advised Fund. Those grants were awarded to Kent State University Tuscarawas, $10,000 for a paramedic to associate degree in nursing program; the Tuscarawas Philharmonic, $15,000; and Big Brothers Big Sisters of East Central Ohio, $10,000.

    The Dennison Community Fund supplied three capital improvement grants to organizations in the village. The Twin City Youth Baseball/PHAC Park was provided with a $1,350; Trinity Hospital Twin City Medical Center received $1,350; and the Dennison Railroad Depot Museum was awarded $2,700.
