CAMBRIDGE — Garaway marched through the hills of Guernsey County with fervor on Wednesday, dodging rain drops along the way.

The Pirates returned to Sugarcreek with important hardware for their efforts.

Senior Trace Gibson fired a 3-under-par 69 to lead four scores in the 70s as Garaway fired a 300 and earned the team title by three shots over Hiland at a Division III sectional tournament at Cambridge Country Club.

Gibson, a Cleveland State recruit, used a hot putter to shoot 2-under 34 on the front nine and 1-under 35 on the back. His only blemish was a bogey on the par-3 eighth — his 17th hole of the day — but he was otherwise sterling.

He was far from alone in his ascent.

Classmate Nick Mast turned at even and finished at 76, while sophomores A.J. Miller and Henry Swartzentruber checked in at 77 and 78, respectively. Miller shot 37 on his inward nine, as the Pirates shot 150 on each side.

Defending state champion Hiland got a 72 from junior Jack Mast out of the No. 1 spot, while sophomore Andrew Beun posted 76, senior Camden Bille 78 and freshman Jesse Conn 81.

Strasburg was fifth at 333 behind sophomore Gavin Weaver's 78, junior Gage Bonifant's 83 and 86s from senior Jason Grywalsky and junior Drew Lancaster; Malvern claimed sixth with 333 behind sophomore Cooper Kiehl's 77, junior Cameron Good's 83, sophomore Tyler Pelle's 84 and freshman Ayden Pelle's 89.

Conotton Valley was seventh (349), Tuscarawas Central Catholic 11th (382) and Newcomerstown 16th (491) in the 18-team event.

The top six teams and individuals from nonqualifying teams advanced to next week's district at River Greens in West Lafayette. Woodsfield Monroe Central (third with 323) and Buckeye Trail (fourth with 324) earned the other two team spots.

Beverly Fort Frye junior Chatum Courson, in a continuance of a strong season, fired 70 to qualify as an individual, joining Crooksville's Bo White (73), Fort Frye's Carter Brown (82), Conotton Valley's Garrett Reiter (83), Caldwell's Cameron Sidwell (84) and Hannibal River's Kaden Hunt (86).

Senior Brooks Bower and senior Logan Reiter had 87 and sophomore Kaden Leggett 92 for Conotton; sophomore Holden Civeiello posted 93, junior Noah Lengyl 95, senior Nathen Wright 96 and freshman Ed Bachman 98 for TCC.
