TOPEKA — The area is now succeeding at the state level as tennis concluded its season last week. Other sports are gearing up to make an impact statewide, too.
With all of the hard work in the regular season in the rearview mirror, the postseason is here for athletes to push their teams to new heights.
Vote for the Capital-Journal’s athlete of the week for May 6-11. Voting closes at noon on Thursday. Here are the nominees:
Erika Bovell, Washburn Rural soccer
The freshman has been at the right place and at the right time often this season. Bovell clipped a gorgeous goal to the top left corner in the final two minutes of Washburn Rural’s 1-0 win against Seaman on Thursday. The goal at the death was met with a huge celebration from her teammates in a great contest between city rivals.

Brock Bush, Rossville baseball
The first baseman came up clutch in the Bulldawgs’ first round of regional play. Bush nailed a three-run home run to deliver a major highlight in Rossville’s 14-4 win over Council Grove on Friday. The win helped Rossville advance in the playoffs.
Joseph Luke, Hayden tennis
The senior medaled at the Class 3-1A State Championship for the third consecutive season. Luke provided some great shots and stellar serving on Friday and Saturday. His production along with Chase Blaser helped the pair take fifth place in the doubles portion of the tournament.
Evan Schied, Silver Lake track and field
The junior was the top sprinter in the Mid-East League Conference Championship meet on Thursday. Schied won the 100 and the 200-meter dash to lead the field and help score points for the Eagles.
Shawnee Heights baseball: Standout Deacon Pomeroy excels in the 'most challenging' position
Isabell Van Fleet, Shawnee Heights soccer
It was a busy week for the Shawnee Heights goal scoring machine. Van Fleet scored a hat trick in the opening 15 minutes against Lansing on Tuesday. She also scored the game-winning goal for the Thunderbirds in their 1-0 win over Manhattan on Thursday.
Avery Walz, Seaman swimming
One of the top swimmers in the Topeka area shined at the United Kansas Conference Championship on Tuesday. Walz won the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle. She was also a key member of the Vikings’ 200-yard medley relay that took the title.
