Is HomeGoods opening along Topeka's Wanamaker Road? Here's what we know.

A new home furnishing store could be making its way to the capital city.

A city of Topeka building interior alteration permit was issued Aug. 10 to HomeGoods, a chain of home furnishing stores at Wanamaker Square, 1900 S.W. Wanamaker Road.

The permit said the contractor for the project will be Innovative Construction Solutions, a retail construction company based out of Waukesha, Wisconsin. The Capital-Journal reached out to Innovative Construction Solutions but didn't receive a response.

Arielle Abramek, marketing supervisor for HomeGoods, said the company hasn't yet announced a new store for Topeka.

The Capital-Journal reported in December 2023 that the store was looking to open a store at the former Bed, Bath and Beyond site along Topeka's Wanamaker corridor, the mayor and Topeka City Council members were told.

Proposal calls for sales tax in shopping center to stay the same

The measure would revise an agreement the mayor and council approved in 2019 creating a Community Improvement District to enable Fort Wayne, Indiana-based Equity Investment Group Wanamaker LLC to raise the sales tax by 1 cent per dollar at multiple retail properties at the southeast corner of S.W. 17th and Wanamaker Road.

That agreement allows for that tax to be charged at those properties between Jan. 1, 2020, and Jan. 31, 2041. It was approved Dec. 19 by the city of Topeka's governing body.

"It just raises the cap on their ability to capture that sales tax, which has gone up dramatically in the last two years," Attorney Bob Johnson , of the Kansas City, Mo.-based Polsinelli law firm "As they pointed out, that's also more sales tax for the city of Topeka."

How many HomeGoods are in Kansas?

HomeGoods currently has five locations across Kansas, its website said. Those locations include the following:

    • Kansas City, KS: 1817 Village West Parkway.
    • Olathe: 14645 119th St.
