TOPEKA — Two games featured local teams battling it out against each other. Seaman, Hayden, Topeka High and Cair Paravel all went on the road and earned big road victories. The Topeka-area shined on Friday night as they proved their skills in Week 1 action.
Here’s what we learned from the opening night of high school football in the capital city.
The War on 24 belongs to Silver Lake
The Eagles snatched an instant classic victory over Rossville. Silver Lake clinched a 33-26 victory in overtime, marking their eighth War on 24 win in the last nine years. QB Dysen Schooler scored the game-tying field goal that pushed the game into overtime and also threw 3 touchdowns.
Rossville's Tayson Horak danced around the Eagles defense all night as a duel-threat quarterback. He finished with two rushing touchdowns. The Bulldawgs offensive line pushed Silver Lake around in the first half which allowed them to control the ball easily. In the end, Silver Lake's deep threats were the difference in a wild evening.

Old friends reunite in Washburn Rural's victory over Shawnee Heights
It was the first meeting between the two city teams since 2017. Washburn Rural (1-0) edged the Thunderbirds (0-1) 42-21 as a pair of quarterbacks started in their first varsity game. John Hoytal earned the start for the Junior Blues and was on the money early.
Hoytal threw three first-half touchdown passes to Kellan Roth. The ground game worked well for the Junior Blues, too. TJ Minikwu and Jadyn Baum both finished with scores on the ground.
Shawnee Heights' Tyren Parker scored the team's first touchdown in the second quarter with a 51-yard screen pass from Aiden Scott. Parker showcased his incredible speed, maneuvering around several defenders. Just before halftime, David Wakes added a short rushing touchdown to narrow Washburn Rural's lead to 28-14. In the fourth quarter, Scott showed his arm strength with a 47-yard pass to Parker Busenitz, marking Shawnee Heights' final score of the game.
Seaman showed their ability to win away from home
Last year, Seaman (1-0) went 0-4 in the regular season away from home. The Vikings imposed their will on Piper in Week 1 action in the Pirates' home building. Seaman took down their opponents 35-18 to get the road woes off of their back.
Quarterback Max Huston tossed two touchdowns to both Conner Scholes and Bryer Finley in the win. Kaden McKinney added two touchdowns on the ground, too. The Seaman defense stepped up as well. In the third quarter, Kaden Whitehurst made a game-changing interception, returning it for a touchdown and helping the Vikings secure the victory.

Emphatic win for Hayden over Eudora
A scoreless first quarter kept the Wildcats and Cardinals deadlocked, but Hayden found a groove especially in the second half for an emphatic win over Eudora. Hayden earned the 35-7 win as Kade Mitchell rushed for two touchdowns in the win.
The highlight play came in the fourth quarter when starting quarterback Jett Wahlmeier lofted a pass towards the back of the end zone. Connor Hanika, the back-up signal caller, rose up to meet the ball and snagged the touchdown with one hand. It was a spectacular play that capped off a solid win for the Wildcats.
The Scots light up the scoreboard
Jamon Wilson started the new season perfectly. He took the opening kick-off 90-yards to the house for the first touchdown of the game against Wyandotte.
The Scots were perfect in all three facets of the game as they earned an easy 52-0 win. Highland Park's Joe KingCannon delivered a second half highlight as he juked his way through Wyandotte's defense for a 75-yard touchdown.

Jason Filbeck era off to a flawless start for Topeka High
The Trojans started the season the right way with a 52-19 win over Wichita West on the road. It was the first game for head coach Jason Filbeck, who had his team firing on all cylinders. Tevante Ewing scored three touchdowns in the game including a 70-yard reception from quarterback Zane Smith.
Smith was also able to find Jayden Norman for a 90-yard touchdown as Topeka High's big play were a difference maker in Week 1. The Trojans defense also gave up just six points in the first half to shut down the Pioneers. This was the first meeting between the two schools.
Cair Paravel can win also win at 11-man
The Lions kicked-off their first season of 11-man football in style. Cair Paravel went on the road and took down West Franklin 44-0. They showed that they can hang in Class 1A after the first week of action.
