Report: Kansas basketball target, 5-star prospect Darryn Peterson sets commitment date

LAWRENCE — Kansas basketball fans won’t have to wait much longer to learn if Darryn Peterson will commit to play in college for the Jayhawks.

Peterson, a 247Sports Composite five-star prospect, is going to announce his decision on Nov. 1 in a little more than three weeks. That news comes from a report by On3, which was told this would happen by Peterson’s father. Among the four schools Peterson is considering, in addition to Kansas, are Kansas State, Ohio State and USC.

These 7 Kansas basketball non-conference games stand out as Jayhawks’ 2024-25 season nears

“I knew a lot about Kansas coming into the visit,” Peterson once told On3 about Kansas. “I’ve been a fan of Kansas for a long time, so I knew everything about the program. Being able to talk to Coach (Bill) Self was cool. I’ve never been able to talk with him face-to-face like that. He’s a cool guy and a great coach. The biggest thing about the facilities for me was they have a gym inside of where they live. I would be able to get into that whenever I need to.”

Peterson is not just a five-star, but the top-rated combo guard in the nation and the third-ranked prospect overall. As of yet, Kansas doesn’t have any public commitments in its 2025 recruiting class. In the 2024 recruiting class, the Jayhawks brought in two players from the high school ranks — five-star Flory Bidunga and four-star Rakease Passmore.

Later this month, Kansas will hold its annual Late Night in the Phog event in a newly-renovated Allen Fieldhouse. It then has an exhibition on the road at Arkansas and an exhibition at home against Washburn before the start of the regular season. The Jayhawks’ season opener is Nov. 4 at home against Howard.
