The Kansas Black Leadership Council has conducted its Kansas Black Leadership Brunch Series through discussions and community building sessions in Lawrence; Wichita; Kansas City, Kansas; and Manhattan.

The statewide initiative has gathered Black Kansans to inspire, engage and empower through conversations centered on leadership and civic involvement, a KBLC news release said.

This year's final stop will include a brunch Saturday at Hotel Topeka. It will include keynote speaker Kaye Monk-Morgan, president and CEO of the Kansas Leadership Center. Monk-Morgan will highlight the series' core message: Leadership is accessible to all — it's about action, not titles.

Stacey Knoell, KBLC board of directors' president and Kansas African American affairs commission executive director, said the goal is to bring Black Kansans together, with a focus on civic engagement.

“One of the things that’s really big and important for KBLC is that leadership is not necessarily a position,” Knoell said. “Leadership is something that anyone can do. If you have a title or don’t have a title — from any position, a person can lead.”

Gov. Laura Kelly will also make a guest appearance by "lending her support to this essential dialogue on leadership and community engagement," the news release said.

What does Kansas Black Leadership Council do?

KBLC was founded in 2015 by Bonita Gooch, Kenya Cox and the late Gail Finney, KBLC advocates for political and social issues affecting Black communities in Kansas.

Through legislative advocacy, leadership development, and community engagement, the organization empowers Black Kansans to lead from any position.

Launched two years ago in Wichita, the series has expanded to multiple cities with the aim of encouraging Black Kansans to take meaningful action and through participating in local organizations, serving on commissions and boards, or exercising their right to vote.
