An elderly pedestrian was killed and another person was injured Thursday afternoon when they were hit by a car in an Alexandria parking lot, according to police.

The Alexandria Police Department identified the deceased victim as Merry S. Smith, 79, who was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash in the 1400 block of MacArthur Drive.

The area includes the MacArthur Village shopping center.

According to the news release, the driver of a car had a medical episode. He became unconscious and hit the pedestrians, it reads.

The other pedestrian was taken to a hospital. No condition was immediately available for that person.

An investigation is continuing, and "more details will be shared as they become available," it reads.

"Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of those involved."
