DURHAM - Voyager Academy officially broke ground on its much anticipated Performing Arts Center.

“This is a very exciting moment for Viking staff, families and the Durham community. As we break ground today (May 20), we are not just starting the construction of a building, we are laying the groundwork for creation, connection and celebration,” Voyager Managing Director Ellie Schollmeyer said.

The 20,000 square foot structure will be built on the last remaining land on campus and will house classrooms, meeting space and a 400-plus seat auditorium.

“This will be a space where the Voyager community can come together to experience the magic of live performance; to be moved by the beauty of music, dance and theatre created by our students and staff. The Performing Arts Center will also be a collaborative space for all students and a gathering place where experiences are shared, memories are made and friendships grow,” Schollmeyer stated.

Voyager Academy will be funding the entire construction of the building with reserves saved over the years. However, the school launched a SHARE THE LOVE fundraising campaign on Feb. 14 to furnish the interior of the auditorium and classrooms with state of the art equipment, lights and sound systems. The Wilkinson Charitable Foundation and Clean Green Environmental will be matching all donations up to $50,000 to help reach the $100,000 goal. Voyager Academy is a fully-accredited K-12 public charter school.
