Sheriff's Office requests pay increase in 2025 budget
A second public hearing regarding the Yadkin County 2025 fiscal year budget was held Monday. At the June 13 public hearing 19 people spoke in favor of a significant pay increase for employees requested by the Yadkin County Sheriff’s Office. An additional nine people spoke during Monday’s public hearing. The proposed budget does include a 3.5 percent cost of living adjustment, effective July 1, 2024, and two percent performance increases effective January 1, 2025 for all employees. ...
Elkin School Board selects new board member
Near the end of Monday night’s meeting of the Elkin City Schools Board of Education, the board voted its approval for a new member to replace Johnny Blevins who resigned from the board last month due to a move out of district. The board voted 4-0 against the Surry County GOP’s nominee Patty Crosswhite and instead selected Jill Bellia. EES student wins MLB Pitch, Hit & Run Competition
CONCORD — Landon Norman, a rising 6th grade student at Elkin Elementary School, recently participated in and won the MLB Pitch, Hit and Run competition held at the D-bat Baseball Complex in Concord on May 28. Major League Baseball’s Pitch, Hit and Run competition is a free event that provides boys and girls ages 7 to 14 an opportunity to showcase their baseball and softball skills, while earning a chance to attend and perform during the MLB World Series. Norman won the 11-12 year old baseball division from over 150 participants and has qualified to advance to the MLB Team Championships to be held in August. Norman has chosen to travel to the NY Yankees Stadium to participate on Team Yankees to try to advance to the MLB World Series Championship in October.
Yadkin County Retired School Personnel announce scholarship winners
The Yadkin County Retired School Personnel gives the Fred C. Hobson Scholarship each year to a senior planning to major in Education at Forbush High School and Starmount High School. The amount of the scholarship this year is $1,000. The scholarship is named after a former longtime superintendent who served as the Yadkin County Schools superintendent from 1939 to 1971. Surry Community College is offering a North Carolina Real Estate Broker, Pre-Licensing course that will meet at The Yadkin Center, 1001 College Drive, Yadkinville. The course will start on Monday, Aug. 5, from 6 to 9 p.m. and will provide students the knowledge to take the N.C. Provisional Broker Exam. A 'smokin' hot time at Juneteenth Fest
The temperature was hot on Saturday in Elkin and so was the entertainment and fun at the fourth annual Juneteenth Festival hosted by community group Bridge of Unity. Saturday’s festival included live music, food trucks, a barbecue cookoff, live wrestling demonstrations and more. The festival has grown in the few years since its inception and was held this year at the new stage and festival grounds near the Heritage & Trails Center in Elkin. As part of the festivities, Elkin Mayor Sam Bishop read a proclamation for Juneteenth. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021 but has long been celebrated in Black communities in America as the final fall of slavery.
