Yadkin school system to operate summer meal sites for students
The Yadkin County School System will operate the 2024 Summer Feeding Program at several sites in the county. Children 18 and under are eligible to receive a breakfast and lunch meal at no cost. Lady Cardinals win first ever state championship in softball
DURHAM– The Lady Cardinals of East Wilkes High School faced off with the Panthers of Northside-Pinetown on the field at Duke University as they battled for the NCHSAA 1A State Championship in softball on Friday and Saturday. In the best two of three series that required all three games to name the champion, the Lady Cardinals claimed victory in an exciting 9-3 win, giving their school their first ever state championship in fast-pitch softball and the school’s first state championship since the girls tennis team won in 2008 and the first for any Wilkes County school since 2017. ...

The merry month of May still has a week remaining and the strawberry season is still going strong, with warm May days the berries are getting ripe quicker. Usually the strawberry harvest will last until the first full week of June. Lady Cardinals headed to State Championship
East Wilkes Lady Cardinals are headed to play in the 1A NCHSAA State Championship in softball. The Lady Cards beat the Black Knights of Robbinsville 4-0 on Tuesday, May 21 as they hosted. The Cardinals then traveled the long road to Robbinsville on Friday, May 24 and won 9-6, claiming the Regional win in the best 2 out of 3 matchup. The Cardinals will now face off with the Panthers of Northside-Pinetown on Friday, May 31 at Duke University in Durham. Game time is set for 5 p.m. In the best 2 out of 3 matchup, the second game will be played on Saturday, June 1 at 11am and if a third game is needed, it will be played on Saturday at 5pm. The Cardinals are seeded above the Panthers and will be the home team in the opening game.
EHS Lady Elk’s Track Team finishes 1st in conference
The Lady Elk’s Track & Field Team won the Northwest 1A Conference Championship on May 2. Coach Clarence Edwards expressed his excitement, “these young ladies were very impressive. There were conference and school records broken, multiple personal bests, and an all around winning effort by all! I would like to give special recognition to Julissa Harper and Cama Ball for stepping in, giving great effort and sacrificing for the team. Fallen honored with Memorial Ruck at park
The Captain Mark Garner VFW Post 7794 hosted a Memorial Ruck through Elkin park and downtown on Saturday. “We had a great turn out for our second annual Memorial Ruck,” said one of the event organizers. “We had young and old, and all ages in between. People joined us from as far away as Pilot Mountain to walk in memory of a fallen service member. We want to give a special thanks to Elkin Fire Department for traffic control, Elkin High School JROTC cadets for leading the ruck and carrying colors, Elkin Elementary Beta for making the banner and walking, and all of Forbush High JROTC who bussed in from Yadkin county to be a part of such an important event.”

Law enforcement investigating alleged misconduct of Yadkinville teacher assistant
Officials with Yadkin County Schools were made aware of allegations of misconduct made against Ivey S. Pauca, a staff member of Yadkinville Elementary School, last Friday, May 24. District administration immediately began investigating the incident, and there is also a pending investigation by law enforcement personnel. Pauca was employed as a teacher assistant in YCS from January 7, 2020 to July 21, 2022. Pauca resigned to work in another school district and was reemployed in YCS on October 3, 2023. On May 24, Pauca resigned her position as teacher assistant. “The administration of Yadkin County Schools will continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement in the investigation (and prosecution, if applicable) of any allegations of misconduct against an employee of Yadkin County Schools,” said a Yadkin County School official.

Starmount seniors ended their high school careers Friday evening on the school football field as the sun was beginning to set. The ceremony for the 123 graduates began with a presentation of the colors by the Starmount JROTC and singing of the National Anthem by the Concert Choir. Arlington Fire & Rescue lowers ISO ratings
Chief Kevin Macemore, Arlington Fire & Rescue, announced the 2024 Certificate of Fire District Rating for the two districts covered by the department during the Jonesville Town Council meeting on May 13. Fire District Ratings are given based on inspections by officials from the North Carolina Department of Insurance Office of State Fire Marshal. Inspections are required as part of the North Carolina Response Ratings System. Officials assessed the department’s staffing levels, equipment, communications capabilities, and water source availability. Peyton Elizabeth Spicer was awarded the Herman Laffoon Travelers Protective Association (TPA) Scholarship, given by TPA’s local Post CC.
