The California-Hawaii Elks Major Project has been busy this week assessing the vision needs of Del Norte kids, ages 3-6. The Elks of California have sponsored and developed this Vision Care Program to provide emergency financial assistance for eye examinations, glasses and medical care for eligible children with covered eye conditions. The Program was established in 1950 to provide therapy services for children with disabilities who have unmet physical, occupational and speech language therapy needs. In 1965, the Major Project expanded and introduced its Vision Screening Program for kids with vision deficiencies.

Cathy Hallman, Pediatric Vision Screener conducted some 150 eye tests for Del Norte preschoolers within the Del Norte Unified School District.

Henry Geiger, Exalted Ruler of Elks Lodge 1689 in Crescent City shared the goal of the Elks and its Purple Pigs Piggybank program collection, this past year. The Purple Pigs were stuffed with contributions by local Elks. “ We’ve collected about $4200 thanks to our fellow Elks to help kids walk, talk, see and play,” said Geiger.

A huge thank you to Henry Geiger and all the Elks who serve selflessly to help our kids benefit and appreciation to the California Elks Major Project Vision Care Program for its fine work by the vision screeners.
