Memorial Day 2024 was recognized by VFW Post 1381 and some 200 members of the Public.

Post Commander David Cooper welcomed those who came to “… remember and honor the service who gave their lives in our Nation’s great cause. We are surrounded here with the last resting places who have gone before us and we are here to ensure that their service and sacrifice…is never forgotten.”

After an invocation by newly-appointed VFW Post 1381 Chaplain Tim Stahl, Pledge of Allegiance, and Prayer the Eternal Flame was lighted by Wade Mayes.

Scott Rogers delivered the reading of Flanders Field poem after World War I and spoke about the Red Poppy significance of the beautiful flower covering the land where so many were killed in what was called the Great World War. The Red Poppy serves to remind all the dream of ending all war.

Chaplain Tim Stahl shared an emotional tribute to Cpl. Jason Dunham who was awarded the Nation’s highest recognition, The Medal of Honor for throwing his helmet and body over an exploding grenade in April, 2004. Cpl. Dunham died eight days later in Bethesda Naval Hospital. His action saved the lives of his 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine platoon.

The gripping account of Cpl. Dunham’s ultimate sacrifice humbled the silent audience.

The Honorable Judge Robert Cochran sang two songs, Woody Guthrie’s, This Land is Your Land. This Land is My Land and God Bless America.

Closing out the ceremony, Doug Plack read the names of 44 Del Norters killed in Action from World War II, Korea, Viet Nam. Persian Gulf, Afghanistan and 911.

The Memorial Day Service was closed following a three-volley rifle salute by members of Post 1381.
