Letter: Let the kids play ball on the grass area at Pine Grove School

I am writing about a concern I have regarding playground policy at Pine Grove School. I do not know if the same policy exists for other schools.

On Monday, May 20, I was at the school participating in their Family Lunch program with my son-in-law, small grandson and my 2nd grade grandson. Aside from the wind it was a lovely day and fun event, as usual.

However, on this day I witnessed two Yard Duty women roust two separate groups of children from the grassy area. One group was several boys with a soccer ball at the baseball diamond. The other a group of girls with a dance ribbon dancing and twirling their ribbon in the wind.

I went to ask the principal why the children could not play in the field area, but she was very busy with the Book Fair as it was the final day to purchase books. I went into the office and wrote her a one-page note asking why. I left her my phone number. She knows me and would have no problems contacting me even without the phone number. To date I have not heard back from her. I do not appreciate being ignored.

Additionally, of the seven adults seemingly on yard duty five were gathered in a circle chatting and laughing together, not roaming the yard watching the children at play. With that many adults available, why weren’t a couple stationed out on the grass to watch the children play out there?

What is the wonderful grassy expanse on our school grounds for if not for the children to run, play games and congregate in small groups to chat and associate?
