IN MY VIEW: Is America a democracy or republic?
We have two major parties in America, the Democrats and the Republicans. It is not surprising that these two parties disagree on what form of government we have. Are we a democracy or a republic or some combination of both? I found a story on this topic from Jefferson Public Radio that has some interesting insights. “Since the election of 2020, supporters of former President Donald Trump have become notably more willing to assert their belief that voting in America is suspect. That Trump won...

Consumer inattention can lead to risky purchases, new OSU research finds
Researchers have developed a new theory of how changing market conditions can lead large numbers of otherwise cautious consumers to buy risky products such as subprime mortgages, cryptocurrency or even cosmetic surgery procedures. These changes can occur in categories of products that are generally low risk when they enter the market. As demand increases, more companies may enter the market and try to attract consumers with lower priced versions of the product that carry more risk. ...
Beleaguered Harbor Commission Mired in an Ocean of Debt, Dysfunction and Restraining Orders
In its Mission Statement, “The Crescent City Harbor District (CCHD) provides sustainable marine and shore-based commercial, economic, educational and recreational opportunities for the benefit of the community.” Along the journey to meet this lofty goal, the CCHD has managed to upset several Harbor tenants, vessel owners who moor their boats in the Harbor and at least two commissioners who’ve very publicly expressed concerns over Harbor operations and finances. The latest imbroglio involves a Bayside RV resident (who shall remain anonymous) and Harbormaster Tim Petrick who...
Straw bale gardens work where others won’t
A lack of space needn’t keep you from a bounty of fresh produce if you turn to straw bales for planting edible gardens. Straw bales take up little space and produce almost anything you can grow in an in-ground garden, said Brooke Edmunds, a horticulturist with Oregon State University Extension Service. The rectangular straw bales bring gardening up to a more manageable height for people with disabilities. And if your soil is impossibly compacted clay, straw bales come to the rescue by providing an organic...
