Letter: Governor’s handling of homeless disappointing

As a concerned citizen, I feel compelled to express my deep disappointment in Governor Gavin Newsom’s handling of the homelessness crisis plaguing our state. Despite billions of dollars allocated towards this issue, it’s disheartening to see that the situation has only worsened, with families forced to live on the streets or in makeshift shelters like buses.

The proliferation of tent cities and skid rows is not just a blight on our communities but a stark reminder of the systemic failure to provide adequate support and resources for our most vulnerable population. What’s more frustrating is the presence of numerous vacant and unoccupied homes juxtaposed against skyrocketing rents, highlighting a fundamental flaw in our housing system.

Instead of meaningful interventions, we’re witnessing a cycle of neglect and mismanagement that only perpetuates the crisis.

It’s time for our elected officials to prioritize compassionate and effective solutions that ad-dress the root causes of homelessness, including affordable housing, mental health services, and addiction support. We cannot continue to turn a blind eye to the suffering of our fellow citizens while billions of dollars are seemingly squandered without tangible results.

As constituents, we demand accountability and decisive action from Governor Newsom and our state government to truly make a difference in the lives of those affected by homeless-ness.

    Sincerely,

    Terry Dean Brooks

It is beyond disappointing. I am a homeless mother. I have a 1, 3, and 6 year old and despite desperate pleas, and emails sent to every organization promising reprieve...we still are without shelter, without substantial nutrition and without the hope for better days. How? How is it possible to starve in the presence of abundance? We had a home provided by a local non profit. I was unable to pay my portion of the rent. I reached out to my case workers, requesting assistance to prevent eviction. I was denied. We were left to fall in the cracks. We are treated as lesser than. A stray animal is able to receive the necessities easier than a human. We have been forced to reside in near squalor amidst billions of dollars of abundance. We do not look like society's version of homeless vermin. We all believe that humanity would step in before they would have to endure the face of inhumane conditions. We all did until we no longer did.
