A 9/11 memorial event in Tuscaloosa will be open to the public for the first time this year.

The Tuscaloosa 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb, which originated in 2018, will be held Sept. 11 at Coleman Coliseum.

The climb, organized by Alabama Athletics in coordination with the University of Alabama Police Department, consists of 2,200 steps up and 2,200 steps down for participants. The climb is equivalent to the 110 floors of the World Trade Center in New York.

For the Tuscaloosa memorial, a pre-climb ceremony will begin at 7:45 a.m.

An 8:15 a.m. climb will be reserved for first responders, followed by an 11:30 a.m. climb that will be free and open to the public.

Members of the public who wish to participate must fill out a form at rolltide.com/form/119.

The twin towers of the World Trade Center were destroyed on Sept. 11, 2001, after two airplanes struck the towers in an attack carried out by al Qaeda terrorists. Hundreds of firefighters, police officers and other public safety personnel died while providing aid for the initial victims.

    Blood drive

Meanwhile, Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue is organizing a 9/11 memorial blood drive in conjunction with the Tuscaloosa Police Department, the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, the Alabama Fire College and NorthStar paramedics.

The blood drive is scheduled to be held 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Sept. 11-14 at the Tuscaloosa Fire Administration Office, 3200 Greensboro Ave.

“To honor those lives lost and in tribute to the 441 first responders, we are asking for your help in collecting 110 blood/platelet donations. Your blood donation will honor the past while providing hope for the future,” a Facebook post from Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue states.
