McDonald’s abruptly closes location after 40 years as fans find note on door – diners fear another ‘boring gray box’

A RETRO McDonald's has shut down after around 40 years to make way for a renovation, alerting customers with a note on the door.

However, fast foodies fear that the new McDonald's will be drab.

Customer Ted Talevski shared news of his local McDonald's closure in a Facebook post from July 21.

He noted it was the final day before renovation for the last 1980s-themed McDonald's in Akron, Ohio - around 40 miles from Cleveland.

After maintaining its theme for over 40 years, the fast food chain announced it would renovate the location to have a more modern look.

It shared the news via a note on the front door.

"Our store is being rebuilt!!!" began the note.

"We will be closing at 11:00 am Sunday, July 21, 2024."

The note shared that the location would reopen in late fall.

COLOR DRAIN

Talevski was disappointed about the remodel, fearing the renovations would take away the location's character.

"It's getting replaced with a boring gray box," he said.

He shared images of the 1980s-themed McDonald's, which featured animal decor, a colorful play area, old-timey automobile figures, bird-themed decorations, and nature paintings.

Former McDonald's models also had more colorful exteriors, with bright red and yellow color schemes.

Some new locations feature gray colors with a slight touch of vibrancy in the yellow McDonald's logo.

McDonald's diners on Quora discussed the chain's transition to "gray and dull" remodeled locations.

They speculated it had to do with a transition in thinking.

"The 80s/90s were all about color, fun, creativity and catering to the future (the kids).. now it seems as if the world does not want any of that, they don’t want free thinkers— so now they are bland and boring as to not encourage creative thinkers," said one user.

Another user noted that the changed mentality was reflected in the trend toward modern architecture in the US.

"All the cars are grey and white. All the house interior decorating schemes are grey and white. All the color schemes in movies are monochromatic grey and black," said one user.

"There’s is no color anymore. It's like everything is a grey carton of white eggs."
