Victor Wembanyama breaks down in tears after leading hosts France to Olympic gold medal game and dream USA final

VICTOR Wembanyama couldn’t hold back his emotions after Team France’s victory in the semifinal over Germany.

Team France made an improbable run to the finals after upseting Canada in the quarterfinal and Germany in the semifinal.

Wembanyama recorded 11 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and three blocks in the 73-69 win over Germany.

France will now go head-to-head with Team USA on Saturday at 3:30 pm Eastern time for a gold medal.

After the semifinal game, the 7-foot-4 star was overcome by emotion and began to cry.

“It’s a chance to write history,” Wembanyama said about the prospect of playing for a gold medal.

“The fans made it hard for me not to cry.”

This is the first time since the 1996 Atlanta Olympics that the host country will advance to the gold-medal match in men’s basketball.

The box score doesn’t highlight the impact Wembanyama had on the game.

Wembanyama’s presence in the paint deterred Germany from driving in the paint, which is a major part of their game.

Germany averaged 29 points in the point per game for the tournament but was limited to just 28 on Thursday.

If France pulls the upset over the USA it would be the first time in Olympics history that France’s men’s basketball team has won a gold medal.

Wembanyama and Team France’s path to the final hasn’t been a clear one.

The team played subpar in group play which included a scare against Japan and a blowout loss to Germany.

Meanwhile, Team USA was dominant up until their nail-biter against Serbia on Thursday.

Team USA defeated each team they played in group play by double digits.
