A lot was riding on France coach Henry, with the legend used to winning as a player but not as a coach.

But the man of the moment turned out to be Rayo Vallecano’s Camello, whose double strike in extra-time sealed the gold medal for Spain and crushed Henry’s Olympic dream.

In an interview after the victory with Camello, a dejected Henry walked across the background before spotting the 23-year-old.

The Arsenal legend then showed his class as he stopped to to hug and congratulate the young Spaniard.

Camello said: “Me scoring those goals. Thanks to my team-mates for believing in me.

“The goalkeeper coach told me that he dreamed that I would score the goal of the final. Olympic champions.

“This is history, since 1992. We will value it more as time goes on. We are the happiest kids in the world.”

France opened the scoreline but La Roja hit back with three goals in 10 minutes through Alex Baena and Fermin Lopez’s brace to take a 3-1 lead at half-time.

    Then Maghnes Akliouche’s flick and Jean-Philippe Mateta’s last-minute penalty made it 3-3.

But Camello’s terrific goalscoring display meant Spain were crowned the men’s Olympic soccer champion for the first time since 1992.

Spain’s gold medal in Paris comes less than a month after the senior national team won Euro 2024.

And La Roja beat France there too – downing them 2-1 along the way in the semi-finals.

Despite not winning, Henry said he was proud of his squad who picked up silver medals.

He said: “There were a few minutes during the first half in which we disappeared and we paid a high price for that.

“Then we were able to recover and get back in the game. It wasn’t easy to build this team up, but I’m proud of the work we did.”
