In a YouTubeshort, the Treasure Town (@TreasureTownShorts) channel alerted viewers to check their $1 bills, as a "common-looking" one sold for $29,900 in 2008.
A dollar quickly turned into thousands thanks to a discrepancy in the two serial numbers on the banknote's front.
The bill featured a star note on its left side and a non-star note serial number on the right side.
What is a star note?
Star note bills denote replacement banknotes and are used to replace misprinted or damaged currency.
These bills resemble normal paper money but feature a star symbol at the end of the serial number rather than a letter.
Most replacement banknotes feature two star notes - one on the right side of the bill and one on the left.
Bills with two star notes can be valuable due to their rarity, but printing errors with only one star note are even more valuable.
The rarity of a star note bill also depends on the number of banknotes printed during the print run and released into circulation as well as the condition of the bill.
The YouTuber pointed out just how valuable the bill was based on its worn-down condition.
"You can see a fold right there," he said, noting the three visible folds on the bill.
"So somebody literally plucked this out of their pocket change and people still paid about $30,000."
