Grab your wallet because coin and currency expert Eric Miller (@thecoinchannel) shared how to tell if your $2 bill is worth something.

"This $2 bill behind me just made someone over $1,000," the expert began in a video from Wednesday.

He pointed out that the banknote was not in the best condition with a major crease down the middle as well as other fold marks.

Miller said that despite its poor condition, the $2 bill was valuable due to its serial number.

    The bill's serial number was L 00000008.

"Because it has so many zeros and the last number is an eight, it is a low - very low - serial number," he said.

Miller pointed out that the bill was also a star note, saying the star symbol is typically the first thing people notice.

Regular $2 bill star notes sell for around $8 to $12.

Although the star symbol added to the bill's rarity, its true value stemmed from its serial number.

Due to the low serial number, the $2 bill sold for $1,631 at auction on June 26, 2024.

The banknote also had much interest, with 23 bids.

"You got to check all your $2 bills for this - that's a huge sale," said Miller.

    STAR APPEAL

Another $1 bill sold for a whopping $30,000 thanks to its star symbol.

In a YouTube short, the Treasure Town (@TreasureTownShorts) channel alerted viewers to check their $1 bills, as a "common-looking" one sold for $29,900 in 2008.

A dollar quickly turned into thousands thanks to a discrepancy in the two serial numbers on the banknote's front.

The bill featured a star note on its left side and a non-star note serial number on the right side.

    What is a star note?

Star note bills denote replacement banknotes and are used to replace misprinted or damaged currency.

These bills resemble normal paper money but feature a star symbol at the end of the serial number rather than a letter.

Most replacement banknotes feature two star notes - one on the right side of the bill and one on the left.

Bills with two star notes can be valuable due to their rarity, but printing errors with only one star note are even more valuable.

The rarity of a star note bill also depends on the number of banknotes printed during the print run and released into circulation as well as the condition of the bill.

The YouTuber pointed out just how valuable the bill was based on its worn-down condition.

"You can see a fold right there," he said, noting the three visible folds on the bill.

"So somebody literally plucked this out of their pocket change and people still paid about $30,000."

Coins can also sell for far more than their face value, with a quarter selling for over $8,000 thanks to two key details.

A half-dollar also sold for $7,000 – check for a "special" detail and two other key features.
