Team GB star Georgia Bell wins bronze medal in women’s 1500m after dramatic finish at Olympics 2024

TEAM GB star Georgia Bell has won Bronze in the Women’s 1500m race at the Olympics.

Bell, 30, turned on the afterburners on the home straight to snatch a podium position with a personal best time of 3:52.61.

Bell was just 0.05 seconds away from taking silver too with Australia ‘s Jessica Hull just pipping her to the finish line.

Bell had timed her run to perfection, waiting for the right moment to attack at the end and push herself up the standings.

And with just a matter of metres to go she was able to overtake Ethiopia’s Diribe Welteji at the death.

Welteji was just 0.14 seconds behind Bell in fourth place.

Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon won the event with an Olympic Record time of 03:51.29.

While Team GB’s Laura Muir finished in a valiant fifth place, earning her own PB in the process.

Muir took time to congratulate her GB teammate Bell and dissect her own performance in a post-race interview with the BBC

She said: “I ran perfectly the way I wanted to. I got off so fast to start and I picked up so many people, but unfortunately I was just about 10 metres too short.

“But I ran absolutely the way I wanted to and I ran the fastest time I ever have so I can’t complain.

“But wow, congrats to Georgia – absolutely amazing.”

Muir wasn’t the only one to congratulate Bell for her race with many fans taking to social media to buzz about the Brit’s incredible achievement.

One wrote: “That’s the gutsiest run I’ve ever seen! AMAZING run!”

While another added: “What a run!”

A third gushed: “What a phenomenal performance to seal her first Olympic medal. Your dedication and hard work have truly paid off, and you’ve made Team GB proud.”

And a fourth posted: “Love to see it. Great finish.”

Bell has an inspiring story of her rise to the top with the star once a promising junior, but giving up on her dream after picking up a string of nasty while studying at the University of California.

Remarkably she fell back in love with the sport during the Covid-19 pandemic, after turning to the parkrun to get in some much-needed exercise.

Bell, who still works full-time in cyber security, returned to competitive running and earned herself a spot on Team GB’s roster this summer.

Her bronze will be a full-circle moment for the speedster, who was actually born in host city Paris.

Speaking after her bronze medal heroics, Bell said: “I am in a very good mood I think. I don’t know if I have ever been this happy.

“That was an absolutely crazy race. I woke up today [feeling] really calm and in a really good mood and I just thought ‘I’m not the fastest person in this race, but I think I’m brave’

“And I thought if I got stuck in then I could make something special happen.”
