Forget convincing performances, coherent coaching ideals and track records of success – United supporters are ready to rely on tenuous foreshadowing to give them hope ahead of the new campaign.

Erik ten Hag ‘s side began their season proper on Saturday when they suffered penalty heartache after a 1-1 draw with noisy neighbours Manchester City in the Community Shield.

But their Wembley worsting has actually given supporters optimism going into the league campaign.

That’s because the Old Trafford faithful have discovered that the last three Community Shield runners up went on to lift the league title that season.

It was Pep Guardiola ‘s Man City on all thee occasions, failing to get the better of Leicester City , Liverpool and Arsenal under the arch.

It’s not just their Community Shield defeat that is exciting United fans, but also the imminent arrival of Bayern Munich centre-back Matthijs de Ligt .

The Dutch international is on the brink of swapping Bavaria for the Theatre of Dreams.

However, it’s not his record of being a top-level defender who can step up on the biggest stage that United fans are finding encouraging, rather the coincidental impact he has on every club he joins.

The 24-year-old has won the league in his first full season for every club he’s signed for.

After his breakthrough into the Ajax first team De Ligt was snapped up by Juventus in 2019, with the Italian heavyweights going on to win the league title that same season.

And his 2022 switch to Bayern Munich saw the German side secure the Bundesliga on the final day of the season.

Coupled with the confidence boosting record of being Community Shield losers, United fans have been sent into frenzy online – suggesting the two omens almost guarantee they will win a 14th Premier League title.

One fan wrote: “It’s written in the stars.”

While another added: “I smell glory!”

A third claimed: “The prophecy has been foretold.”

And a fourth posted: “Shall we book our train tickets now for the parade in Manchester?”

Manchester United finished eighth in the league last season, losing 14 games and finishing with a negative goal difference.

They will kick-start the new Premier League on Friday night when they host Fulham in the season opener at Old Trafford.

And boss Ten Hag is remaining positive about his side’s chances of pulling off something special this season.

Speaking after the Community Shield, he said: “We are going in the new season. I am very pleased with the new structure.

“We are working very good together. The team was always good but I think we can make steps forwards.

“I think from pre-season, and also today, we can take positives but I think if we step up and are more clinical in both boxes, then we can be a successful team.”
