Only 900 shield nickels were struck in 1877, according to Heritage Auctions.

The shield nickel was the first US five-cent piece made out of copper-nickel - the same material that modern nickels are made from.

It was designed by James B. Longacre, the fourth chief engraver of the United States Mint, who began engraving in 1844.

The coin was issued from 1866 until 1883 when it was replaced by the Liberty Head nickel.

The quality varies greatly among these nickels still in circulation, with most pieces being satiny rather than deeply reflective.

"This Star-designated Cameo has stellar contrast and brilliant surfaces," Heritage Auction describes this rare coin.

"The strike is razor-sharp and eye appeal is outstanding."

This rare coin weighs 5 grams.

Heritage Auctions confirmed that this coin is made from 75% metal and 25% copper-nickel.

Coin experts shared that certain nickels could be worth far more than you might expect - and sell for thousands at an auction.

Jefferson nickels were minted in the hundreds of millions during the 1960s.

However, one detail sets some of these nickels apart from the rest - a unique test piece created by the US Mint during its transition from proof coinage to what is now referred to as special mint strikes.

During the mid-1960s, the US Mint was experimenting with various striking techniques to improve the quality and appearance of its coins.

During this period, there were several trial or test pieces, including the 1964 Jefferson nickel.

Unlike its standard counterparts, this particular coin exhibits distinct differences in design and striking quality.

Standard 1964 Jefferson nickels often show flow lines and other imperfections, but the test piece is remarkably well-struck.

These striking differences make it stand out among a sea of more common nickels, contributing to its allure and desirability among collectors.

Meanwhile, an expert has let coin hunters in on a secret and shared what to look for in a 1960s quarter that makes it worth thousands.

Although collecting coins can be a rewarding hobby as there is potential for financial gain, collectors should be trained to notice these specific details.
