THE mum of a 10-year-old schoolgirl found dead with her throat slashed has been charged with murder.

Sophie Wang was tragically found dead at her home on the Gold Coast in Australia by her heartbroken dad as the “beloved” Year 5 student’s school pays tribute.

Queensland Police revealed mum Yingying Xu, 46, was arrested after cops launched a murder investigation.

Detective Acting Inspector Kent Ellis said they tracked down Xu in a nearby street four hours after Sophie’s dad – Yun Wang – reported finding her body.

Ellis told reporters: “This is a tragic and distressing incident and our thoughts are with the family and community at this time.

“In my 15 years as a detective, it is one of the most confronting scenes I have ever seen.”

Sophie was found just after 6pm at her home in Emerald Lakes, Carrara, as her horrified father and emergency services were unable to save her.

Cops started their investigation shortly after.

Yun – an Associate Professor at Griffith University – put on a blue forensic suit at around 6pm and helped officers uncover what happened.

Ellis added: “Despite her father and the emergency service’s best efforts, the 10-year-old was pronounced deceased by attending paramedics.

“An investigation was immediately commenced and as a result the child’s mother was charged with her murder.”

Xu’s case is due to be heard at Southport magistrates court after she didn’t show in person on Wednesday.

She was remanded in custody and will next appear on November 29.

The girl’s principal at Emmanuel College, Dan Brown, wrote a letter to parents paying tribute to the “beloved” schoolgirl.

He wrote: “It is with a heavy heart that I inform you of a tragic incident that occurred in a home within Emerald Lakes last night, resulting in the passing of one of our beloved students.

“We are devastated by this incident and know it will profoundly impact our school community.

“Our prayers go out to the family and friends of the child, and we extend our deepest condolences to all those affected by this tragedy.”

Counselling and grief support services have been provided to all students.

Sophie’s devastated classmate Oliver Hayes, 11, told Daily Mail Australia: “She was one of the smartest kids in our school.

“There’s so many words to describe her. She was very nice, she really cared about people a lot and she was very kind.”

Queensland Police Inspector Lou Serafim said cops were called at 6pm, adding the girl lived at the home where her body was found.

“At approximately six o’clock this evening police received a triple-0 emergency call in relation to a 10-year-old girl who was located deceased in a unit,” she said.

“At this point in time we are treating the death of the 10-year-old girl as suspicious, and investigations are currently under way in relation to the demise of the girl.

“The triple-0 call was made by a relative who was at the incident scene when they located the 10-year-old girl.”

She called the scene “quite traumatic”.

Pictures circulating on social media show several cop cars and an ambulance with their lights flashing on a street.

A tent was put up beside the ambulance shortly before 8pm, according to the Courier Mail.

The Queensland newspaper reported members of a forensics team in blue suits were seen entering the property.

Neighbour Chris Sydes told Australia ‘s Nine News he was struck by “heartache” when he watched the cops come into the street.

He said: “It’s just a terrible, terrible event, terrible, breaks your heart.”

Two male colleagues of Professor Yun visited the home on Wednesday morning and spoke to officers.

Another unnamed resident was in shock.

She told local media: “It’s normally very quiet around here. I can’t believe it.”

Emerald Lakes is located about a 15-minute drive in land from the popular Surfers Paradise.

It’s beside Carrara Stadium, which hosted track and field at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, and about an hour’s drive south of Brisbane.
