Consumers slammed Walmart for a frustrating self-checkout experience

"This is why I don’t shop at Walmart here in crookston anymore," one shopper wrote on Facebook.

The consumer said the last time he was at Walmart, the retailer only had one register open with at least 15 people standing on the self-checkout line.

"I had a cart full of groceries and other stuff," he said. "Needless to say I left my cart at one if the closed checkout lanes and left the store there was at least $200 in groceries in it too."

Several consumers agreed in the comments.

One Facebook user said they only shop at Walmart as a last resort.

Each year, fewer people are shopping in physical stores, according to Forbes.

To stay ahead of the game, companies are focused on creating and sustaining an online presence.

Retailers have been hesitant to invest more money into brick-and-mortar locations, Forbes reported.

Walmart and several other retailers revolutionized their self-checkout experience because of the pandemic.

Consumers preferred a no-contact way to check out their items efficiently - self-checkout kiosks solved that issue for a bit.

Walmart has an entire page dedicated to questions about their checkout process.

"Over the past few years, we have rolled out new Hosted Checkouts in a number of our stores," the website said.

"Our associates working in the Customer Host role can show customers to available registers, help them through the checkout process and answer any questions they may have."

The retailer hopes that the new checkout process will help consumers complete their shopping even faster.

For customers who prefer checking out with a cashier, Walmart said it will continue to have that option available.

However, with the introduction of self-checkout registers came a spike in organized crime and shoplifting.

Consumers have been - intentionally or not - missing items when they're self-scanning at the self-checkout kiosks.

As products kept getting stolen, retailers decided to scale back on self-checkout.

Meanwhile, Walmart has left shoppers furious with their anti-theft measures after one customer was forced to go through multiple levels of security to buy a single pair of socks.

And shoppers were in disbelief when a customer shared multiple pairs of jeans she found priced at 50 cents and $1 at one popular retail store.
