UK weather: Met Office reveals Bank holiday weekend forecast – as rain warning & cooler temps dampen spirits this week

WEATHER forecasts for the coming bank holiday weekend have been revealed while Britain is set for a few days of misery this week.

Today will see sunny spells and scattered showers in the southeast, while to northwest of the country will endure “frequent and heavy” showers, according to the Met Office.

Several places in the south will stay dry and warm, while parts of the north in particular will “turn windy”, forecasters warned.

Tonight will see “blustery showers continuing for a time” in the north, gradually easing through the night.

Other parts of the country will be dry with clear skies, turning chilly.

Wednesday will be “largely fine” in the south with some hazy sunshine, the Met Office says, with rain moving in further north, turning heavy in western Scotland .

Winds will be “strengthening”, and it will be “rather windy” in the north, forecasters warn.

There are also yellow weather rain warnings in place for Wednesday and Thursday – covering much of the western Scottish coast.

There is a slight chance of power cuts and flooding in the affected areas.

Thursday and Friday will see spells of heavy rain, particularly in the north, with strong winds to boot – but these will ease a little into the weekend, the Met Office says.

Getting into the bank holiday weekend, Saturday will see sunshine and scattered showers, which might be “heavy and thundery for a time”.

Sunday will likely be more “settled”, but later on, likely late Sunday or early Monday, another weather front is expected to move in from the Atlantic, bringing rain and wind.

Weather fronts are set to bring the heaviest rain across northern and western hills of Scotland and Northern Ireland, then weakening as these fronts move southeast, further into England and Wales.

The rest of the month, including bank holiday Monday, is signalled to maintain the northwest-southeast split, but with settled weather in the south and east perhaps becoming more extensive across the country later.

Met Office spokesperson Stephen Dixon told The Sun: “The Bank Holiday Weekend for England, Wales and Northern Ireland is likely to start on an unsettled note with showers at times and breezy conditions for many.

“The frequency of these showers will be higher in northern and western areas, with temperatures likely to be below average for the time of year.

“While Northern Ireland will start Saturday with further rain at times, there’s a drier interlude beginning for much of England and Wales, though there is a chance of some showers clipping the southeast of the UK.

“This element is open to some uncertainty at this range and these showers could even remain off shore.

“Sunday will be a day of sunny spells and showers for England and Wales, though any showers are likely to be fairly sporadic in nature.

“There’s some uncertainty by the time we get to the Bank Holiday Monday for England, Wales and Northern Ireland, but a continuation of the existing weather pattern is most likely, with southern areas staying more settled for longer, and those further north and west seeing more frequent showers and some gusty winds, albeit with some drier interludes.

“Throughout the period, temperatures are likely to be slightly below or around average for the time of year, with highs in the low 20s Celsius for those in the south, and slightly lower further north.”
