His company released a statement on Monday announcing his passing .

“Adam was devoted to bringing transparency to government,” the statement read.

“He walked away from business 15 years ago with a singular idea: hold government accountable to the taxpayers it serves. He founded OpenTheBooks to accomplish that task.

“He was a happy warrior. Under his leadership, OpenTheBooks has become a highly respected well-known brand. His death is a loss not only to his family and his organization but the nation.”

According to his obituary posted via Herscher Pilot , Andrzejewski is described as being “loved for his enthusiasm, encouragement, optimism and decency.”

Having hailed from Herscher, Illinois , Andrzejewski began his career as the co-founder and vice president of American Marketing & Publishing, LLC.

He later founded the organization For the Good of Illinois, which launched his long history of demanding government transparency.

Andrzejewski eventually decided to take on politics head-on as he had a brief run for Illinois governor from 2009 until 2010.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Andrzejewski “won the second most number of counties: ten.

“Received over 110,000 votes, plus the endorsement of Lech Walesa- founder of Solidarity Poland, winner of 1983 Nobel Peace Prize, first President of Poland in modern era.”

While his stint only lasted a year, Andrzejewski continued to fight for government transparency.

In 2012, the Illinois native founded OpenTheBooks , a non-profit organization that “captures and posts all disclosed spending at every level of government – federal, state, and local,” according to their website.

Over the years, Andrzejewski has used his platform with OpenTheBooks to speak to big publications, including BBC , Good Morning America , and ABC World News Tonight.
