COSTCO has confirmed that all of its stores will be closed for just 24 hours - forcing shoppers to head to Sam’s Club instead.

But the retailer is offering plenty of sales as the US gears up for the busiest Labor Day weekend ever.

Costco has shared a "friendly reminder" about its opening hours ahead of the big weekend.

"Costco is closed Monday, September 2, 2024, for Labor Day. Costco.com is open 24/7," it revealed on Facebook.

That means that shoppers will be left disappointed - and seeking an alternative - for those last-minute items for the extended break.

For example, Sam’s Club outlets will remain open on Labor Day, which falls on September 2 this year.

But, beware, as Sam's Club will operate under reduced hours.

The warehouse retailer will open from 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. for plus members, and 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. for club members, according to its website.

Costco will, however, operate as normal throughout the rest of the weekend.

As Monday is Labor Day - a federal holiday - this means that banks and post offices will also shut down for the day.

It is advised to deal with banking matters on Friday or Saturday as many transactions are delayed during the holiday weekend.

"Observed the first Monday in September, Labor Day is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers," said the U.S. Department of Labor.

"The holiday is rooted in the late nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being."

It comes as U.S. airlines and airports are gearing up for the busiest Labor Day weekend, according to Reuters.

It reported that a record number of travelers are packing their bags and preparing to jet off to enjoy one last summer trip before the season ends.

The Labor Day weekend is expected to see 17 million people go through airport security - the busiest on record for the travel period - according to government agency Transport Security Administration (TSA), which guards U.S. transportation systems.

Labor Day is especially popular among families as it is the final extended weekend before the school year begins for children across the United States.

Americans often celebrate Labor Day with parades, barbeques, picnics, and other events honoring the working class.
