JOEY Chestnut put on an impressive performance to win the Unfinished Beef hot dog eating contest against Takeru Kobayashi, but it appeared that Kobayashi was the star of the show.

Kobayashi’s family could be seen in tears in the crowd cheering on their speed-eating champ after his defeat at the hands, and stomach, of Chestnut .

Chestnut took home the victory in the contest, eating 83 hot dogs to Kobayashi’s 67.

The massive total of 83 hot dogs was a new world record from Chestnut, breaking his own record.

Despite losing the contest, Kobayashi got a thunderous ovation and had a huge contingent cheering him on.

Kobayashi’s family was in that crowd and they were seen sobbing while cheering him on after chowing down on 67 hot dogs in 10 minutes.

“I feel like I did everything I could,” Kobayashi said through a translator after the event.

Fans were left baffled by how many onlookers cried for Kobayashi in the crowd, and shared their reactions on social media.

“With this Chestnut/Kobayashi thing, never before have I seen so many tears from a hotdog eating contest,” one fan said.

“Women are crying in the audience for Kobayashi. He won off that alone. He’s like the Yu Darvish of hot dogs,” another fan said.

“Props to Kobayashi. He went down swinging,” a third fan said.

“Kobayashi man what a legend. I feel bad for the kids who weren’t around to witness his greatness in real time,” a fourth fan said.

Kobayashi had previously retired in May of this year due to health concerns from years of competitive eating.

He shared this news in a Netflix documentary, before deciding to come out of retirement for one last event.

“I’ve decided to retire from competitive eating. It’s all I’ve done for the last 20 years,” he said at the time.

Kobayashi is a six-time Nathan’s Hot Dog eating contest champion, but said he no longer felt hunger.

“I hear people say they’re hungry, and they look very happy after they’ve eaten,” he said.

“I’m jealous of those people because I no longer feel hunger.

“I hope to live a long and healthy life.”

Kobayashi has competitively eaten all kinds of foods in his career, and he said that unconventional diet is what caused him to lose his hunger.

“I am Japanese but I’ve eaten like an American. I think that’s what damaged my body,” he said.

“I overeat because I’m a competitive eater. When you eat too much, you don’t savor the taste or fully enjoy the smell of the food.

“You ignore you body’s signals, like fullness.”
