I kept my grandma’s old worn quilt for years – I was floored when Antiques Roadshow said it’s worth $10k despite stains

ONE unsuspecting granddaughter was shocked when she was told that a quilt she inherited was worth $10,000.

The surprise came when the owner of the quilt appeared on an episode of Antique Roadshow last week.

According to the Utah native, the Hawaiian mission quilt was passed down to her from her mother who also got it from her grandmother who got it from her mother.

The white quilt featured a red border with several prominent US and Hawaiian flags as well as an eagle in the center with a shield of the American Flag.

In addition to the design, the quilt bore the legend, “Aloha oe Mrs. Libbie Noall.”

“Do you know how your great-grandmother acquired the quilt,” appraiser Kathy Kane asked .

According to the owner, her paternal relative and her husband had served as missionaries to the islands in the late 1800s.

The owner stated that her great-grandparents returned to the island state for a second mission trip.

“At the end of their second mission, the Hawaiian sisters so loved and appreciated Libbie, that they made this quilt and gave it to her as a token of their appreciation,” the owner explained.

When asked by Kane if the owner knew any of the significance of the blanket, the owner pointed out that the design referenced Hawaiian royalty by pointing out the crown pattern.

The owner also pointed out the initials at the bottom of the blanket which stood for Mission Hawaii.

According to the appraiser, the blanket was “extremely desirable” for those in the quilt-collecting world due to its rarity.

Kane stated that the first New England missionaries who went to the island in the 1820s taught the women how to make blankets.

She continued that most quilts feature a “bold graphic design” on a white or pastel background.

“It’s got a lot of symbolism in the design of the quilt,” she continued before adding “it’s a really, really lovely piece.

The quilt showed a little wear and tear in the fabric, but the appraiser told the owner that it wasn’t anything a professional quilt restorer couldn’t clean.

Antiques Roadshow has helped people put a price on their treasures since 1979. Here are some of the most interesting finds

The quilt’s owner was left stunned when she was told that the retail value fell between $9,000 and $10,000.

“Goodness, that’s amazing,” said the owner with a look of shock on her face adding that she had no idea of the value.

This was not the first time that someone was left shocked by a seemingly common item.

An avid collector had been hanging a plate worth $15,000 on her wall for many years.

The large black oval plate had various-sized white circles around the edge and a face in the middle.

According to the owner, she hung it over her stove in the kitchen and that her kids “loved the smiley face.”

Kane revealed that the plate was made by none other than Pablo Picasso.

The woman said her family “didn’t even realize it was a Picasso until five years ago.”
