USERS of the dating apps Bumble and Badoo may be eligible to receive a share of a $40 million settlement.

The settlement benefits Bumble and Badoo users who accessed the apps between November 1, 2016, and December 31, 2021.

The class action lawsuit alleges that Bumble and Badoo unlawfully collected biometric information from users, violating the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA).

This data includes facial geometry scans from photos uploaded to the apps, without proper consent as required by BIPA.

Bumble and Badoo, both owned by Bumble Inc., have not admitted any wrongdoing but have agreed to pay $40 million to resolve the allegations.

Under the terms of the settlement, class members will receive an equal share of the net settlement fund.

    WHAT YOU'LL GET

The exact payment amounts will depend on the number of claims filed, among other factors.

As of now, there are no estimated payment amounts available. In addition to the financial compensation, Bumble and Badoo have agreed to non-monetary relief.

This includes deleting all previously collected biometric information and ensuring compliance with BIPA moving forward.

    HOW TO PARTICIPATE

To participate in the settlement, eligible users must be aware of several key deadlines.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is September 20, 2024.

Meanwhile, the final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for October 23, 2024.

To receive a payment, class members must submit a valid claim form by September 20, 2024.

Bumble or Badoo users who accessed the apps in Illinois between November 1, 2016, and December 31, 2021.

They also had to have been residing in or located in the state during that period may qualify to participate in the settlement.

If you think you might be eligible, you will need to provide app user information, such as your username, email address, or phone number associated with your account.

Class action lawsuits offer groups of people, or 'classes,' a way to band together in court.

These suits are often brought by one or a few people who allege a company or other entity has wronged a large group of people.

When a suit becomes a class action, it extends to all "class members," or people who may have similar complaints to those who filed the suit.

Companies often settle class actions - offering payment to class members who typically waive their right to pursue further legal action by accepting money.

These payout agreements frequently include statements by the defendant denying wrongdoing. Companies tend to settle class actions to avoid the costs of further litigation.

Pollution, discrimination, or false advertising are a few examples of what can land a class action on a company's doorstep.

It is important to file your claim by September 20, 2024, to ensure your participation.

For more information on the settlement or to file a claim, Illinois residents who used Bumble or Badoo are encouraged to visit the settlement website.

The U.S. Sun has also covered several other settlements for which readers may qualify.

Americans can get $400 from a $2 million Bosch settlement if they meet two criteria.

They can also get a payment from a $32 million overdraft fee settlement from TD Bank.
