‘I thought those were dead leeches’ people cry after student shows off the ‘shameful’ lunch she gets served at school

LUNCH is the best part of the day for most students, as they finally get chance to chat to their friends and fill their stomachs.

But one school has bee shamed after a snap of their canteen's offering was shared online.

The student took to Reddit to share a picture of their lunch, which many said looked more like "dead leeches" than a tasty meal.

The Florida-based pupil posted a picture of what looks like spaghetti with two chunks of sweet potato, although many people questioned what the food actually was.

The student said: "My school lunch today in the US (Florida)."

Unsurprisingly, a lot of people on the social media site were shocked by what the school was serving up, as some even questioned if it was safe to eat.

One said: "I thought those were dead leeches."

Another questioned what the mystery grub was and wrote: "I thought bananas and it was deeply distressing."

"What are those two black things? Beef jerky?" another wrote, before someone else suggested they were sweet potatoes.

"God damn I thought they were like a couple of slices of smoked brisket or something," they added.

"Jesus! Who serves sweet potatoes with a pasta dish anyway? Never mind that they look like dried cocoa bean pods," someone else chimed in.

"It's distressing, whatever they are. Just a terrible thing to do to a sweet potato," another wrote.

The questionable mean comes after a teacher and Redditor slammed their school canteen meals.

The educator explained how he was stunned to be served nothing but a mini pizza and chunks of dry sweet potato for lunch.

He explained how he joined the lunch line only to be served a mini pizza and chunks of what turned out to be sweet potato.

And he wasn't the only person who wasn't thrilled by the grub, as he revealed a lot of other students and teachers decided to pass on lunch raather than tuck into the "mystery"

He said: "My school's lunch for today. Allegedly they are sweet potatoes."

One fellow Redditor commented: "Nothing sweet about those."

"After consuming one, I asked my students what they thought, they said the same thing," the teacher replied.

Meanwhile, someone else commented: "Wow - that is just pathetic. I would be in front of the school board ripping a strip. Prisoners get better food than that."

"It looks like something you would find at a gas station around 10.30pm after food has been sitting under the heat lamp for about eight hours," another said.

What the NHS recommends children have for lunch:

The NHS gives a number of suggestions and guidelines on their Chnage4Life website.

    • Base the lunchbox on foods like bread, rice, pasta and potatoes - wholegrain ideally - too keep kids fuller for longer
    • If your child isn't keen on wholegrain, try making sandwiches with one slice of white and one slice of wholemeal bread
    • Try to keep lunchboxes interesting by using a variety of shapes like bagels, pittas and wraps
    • Make food fun as lunches can be more exciting if the child has to put them together, like having foods for dipping and makes a change from sandwiches every day.
    • Opt for low fat foods, like lean meats or fish.
    • Cut down on the amount of spreads you put into sandwiches
    • Always add a bit of salad and vegetables to the meal
    • Cut down on the crisps
    • Chop up some fruit or peal satsuamas and add those instead of sweets
    • Cheese can be high in fat and salt so pick strong tasting ones or go for low-fat varieties
    • Get the kids involved in making the lunch - they'll be more likely to eat it if they helped make it
