As Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announces he’s suspending his presidential bid, did you know that in 1968 his father, Robert F. Kennedy, paid visits to the Beaverton area and spoke at Sunset High School’s Model Democratic Convention ?

That’s right: On May 17, 1968, the senior Kennedy was seeking to win the Oregon primary and made an appearance on the third night of the convention. An estimated 1,300 students attended the night when he spoke.

A photo caption under a picture of Kennedy in the May 23, 1968, Beaverton Valley Times said that those attending were there to "greet, then mob keynote speaker Robert Kennedy."

In March of 1968, the elder Kennedy also talked with Portland State University students during a campaign stop in Portland . Former Oregon Rep. Margaret Doherty, a Tigard Democrat, was among those at the event.
