The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning across Northwest and West Central Oregon, effective from noon on Thursday, Sept. 5, until 10 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 6.

The heat is expected to impact the Tualatin Valley, including Hillsboro, Forest Grove, Tigard and Sherwood, alongside surrounding cities like Newberg. Temperatures are forecasted to reach about 100 degrees, with overnight lows ranging from the upper 50s to nearly 70 degrees, particularly in urban areas.

“Heat-related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat events,” the weather service cautioned, urging residents to stay hydrated, remain in air-conditioned spaces and avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight.

Authorities also stress the importance of not leaving young children and pets unattended in vehicles, as car interiors can reach lethal temperatures within minutes.

To minimize the risk of heat-related illnesses, residents are advised to wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and limit strenuous activities to the early morning or evening hours. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments for those working outdoors.

“Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location,” the weather service advised in its release.

Residents are encouraged to check on relatives and neighbors, and to call 911 if symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke occur.
