Lanett seeks grant for city hall improvements

LANETT — The City of Lanett is seeking a grant of up to $125,000 to replace the heating and air unit for city hall. The funding is being sought through the American Public Power Association’s Demonstration of Energy & Efficiency Development (DEED) program. There’s a deadline of August 15, 2024 to apply for such a grant. The city council approved a resolution to seek the grant at Monday’s council meeting.

DEED grants are available to improve utilities by increasing efficiency, reducing costs, investigating new technologies, offering new services and improving processes and practices to better serve customers. These grants are typically in the $25,000 to $50,000 range but can go up to $125,000.

In other action on Monday, the council approved weed liens on 10 separate properties in the city. These are abandoned lots that become overgrown with weeds and high grass during the growing season. They become unsightly places for neighborhoods all over town. The city attempts to remedy this by cleaning off the lot and placing a lien to recover its cost on the property owner’s tax bill.

A lien in the amount of $136.25 has been placed on property owned by Dale Allen Jennings and Thomas David Preston Sr. on South 3rd Avenue, $161.25 on property owned by James Raymond Smith on South 3rd Street, $136.25 on property owned by Jonathan Porter on South 8th Street, $86.25 on property owned by Judy Watts on South 2nd Avenue, $71.25 on property owned by Stanley Shaw on South 2nd Avenue, $211.25 on property owned by Donna K. Buchanon on South 3rd Street, $111.25 on property owned by PointLink on South 4th Avenue, $86.25 on property owned by the Mark Thomas Webb Family Trust on South 4th Avenue, $111.25 on property owned by Jacqueline Bandy on South 16th Avenue and $136.25 on property owned by Grant Capital on South 8th Street.
