New West Point townhomes open to Point upperclassmen this fall

Point University’s new student housing option, nine brand-new townhomes on West 10th Street, are officially open this fall.

The project began last year last fall. Each of the townhomes has four bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms, and two of the townhomes are designed with ADA compliance in mind. According to the West Point Community Development Manager Dennis Dutton, the townhomes are owned by BC Stones Townhome Development.

Last week, the West Point Municipal Board met to approve a subdivision plat to separate each of the nine townhomes into individual lots for lease.

Rusty Hassell, Point University’s Chief Enrollment Officer, said several of Point’s fall athletes have already moved in and more students will be joining them next week as the fall semester begins.

“It was fun for the community to be able to watch it,” Hassell said. “I mean, it’s always fun to have construction going on because that shows progress and growth. That definitely turned into a great scenario for us while they were building it and now for our students to be able to embrace it.”

Hassell said that Point put a lot of input into the appearance of the townhomes.

The lot located at 605 West 10th Street is in the heart of the historic district of West Point.

“We wanted to be able to make it look like a part of the community there, and so they all look sharp and have a good look to them,” Hassell said.

The townhomes are directed toward Point upperclassmen as another housing option within walking distance of the campus.

Point already has the LLC (Living Learning Community), apartment-style living quarters that are two bedroom/one bathroom.

“This is kind of even elevated from that, but it’s also just a benefit for the students,” Hassell said.

With the cost of rent rising, the townhomes are also a benefit to students struggling to find affordable housing, Hassell said.

Point University classes start on Aug. 21 and many student-athletes are in summer camps gearing up for the season. Orientation will be next week, and Hassell said they are projecting 200-250 new students to join the student body.
