    2024-08-27

    Vanished in Baltimore

Information for this story was obtained from The Charley Project.

In 1996, 24-year-old Tomeka Jefferson was working as a legal clerk in Baltimore, Maryland.

At the time, she was dating 27-year-old Courtney Williams and the couple often spent time at his house. It was February 15, 1996, and Tomeka was at Courtney’s apartment in the 3000 block of Oak Green Circle in Elliot City, Maryland.

Around 10:00 pm, Tomeka spoke with a family member. She told them that she and Courtney were going out that evening.

Two days later, Courtney’s roommate realized no one had seen or heard from Courtney and the roommate reported him missing on February 17, 1996. Tomeka, who was very responsible, didn’t show up for work and her relatives reported her missing on February 19, 1996.

On February 21, 1996, Tomeka’s car, a 1995 Nissan Quest, was found abandoned behind an apartment building in the 4500 block of Old Frederick Road in west Baltimore, a high crime area of Baltimore.

Then on April 7, 1996, the body of Courtney Williams was found floating face-up in Gwynn Falls in the 4500 block of Wetheredsville Road near Baltimore’s Leakin Park. Courtney had been shot multiple times.

    Tomeka has never been found.

Courtney Williams was rumored to be a drug dealer who made up to $30,000 per week in the illegal drug trade. A man named Archie Smith worked for Courtney. When Courtney’s body was discovered, police found some forged documents in Courtney’s abandoned minivan.

The fake documents read the Baltimore Police Department seized some drugs from Archie. The documents were signed by a Baltimore police officer who had been with the department for only one year, Andre Johnson.

An investigation revealed that Archie stole some drugs from Courtney. He then paid Andre to create these fake documents stating the drugs had been seized. The documents had both Andre Johnson and Archie Smith’s fingerprints on them.

Andre Johnson resigned from the police department and was arrested. He told authorities he overheard Archie and Courtney’s brother, Christopher Black, planning the murder of Courtney. He said the men were jealous that Courtney was making so much money in the drug trade.
Andre Johnson was charged with bribery, filing a false public document, and malfeasance.

No one has ever been charged in the murder of Courtney Williams or the disappearance of
    Tomeka Jefferson.

Tomeka Jefferson is 5’5” and weighed 135 pounds when she vanished.

Please contact the Baltimore Police Department with any information at 410-887-2214.
