Students in Wake County could be reassigned to different schools starting next year in a reshuffle that district leaders say will create stability moving forward.

County school administrators unveiled Tuesday a preliminary plan to fill four new schools in the south and southeastern portion of Wake County. If adopted, the plan would move thousands of students from one school to another.

District leaders stressed that the move is in line with the long-term plan for the school system, and that those students affected would not be bounced around any more in the coming years.

“We recognize and own that this is a lot of shifting, and we also recognize that if we do this then we can stay away for a while,” Susan Pullium, the district’s senior director of student assignment, told the board. “This plan addresses the growth in the area and also sets us up well for the long term.”

Next year, the district will open two new schools in Holly Springs: Rex Road Elementary and Felton Grove High School. The district will also open Bowling Road Elementary in Fuquay-Varina, and Pleasant Plains Elementary in Apex.

Pullium laid out a few possible moves the district is considering.

Students from Buckhorn Creek, Herbert Akins Road, Fuquay-Varina and Lincoln Heights Elementary Schools could move to Bowling Road Elementary.

Some students from Apex, Apex Friendship and Holly Springs High School could be relocated to Felton Grove High School.

Students currently enrolled at Buckhorn Creek and Holly Grove Elementary Schools could move to  the newly opened Rex Road Elementary

In addition to these, the district is considering a host of other less drastic moves to properly house students and prevent overcrowding both now and as the district’s enrollment numbers continue to swell.

The plan can be viewed in its entirety on the district website.

Wake County residents are invited to voice support or concern for the new plan on a forum that the district will keep open until mid-October. District officials say they will use the feedback to amend the proposal as needed before a second draft is released Oct. 15.
