Roll clouds are a type of arcus clouds, spectacular low-level long and thin clouds that are associated with intense thunderstorms. They are often seen beneath cumulonimbus clouds. Roll clouds differ from the popular “shelf” clouds (which are also a type of arcus cloud) in that shelf clouds are attached to the storm cloud, whereas roll clouds are separated from it. Here’s a great example of how roll clouds can make an otherworldly sight.

“Sea fret” is a phenomenon local to Northeast England that describes a wall of cool fog found on the beach, even when it is bright and sunny just half a mile inland. It’s the local name for what is officially called “coastal fog,” and is known as “haar” in parts of Scotland. It happens when warm summer air drifts over a cold sea, which makes it cool down and condense, creating fog. These frets can last for hours or even days, depending on variables such as ground temperature, wind strength, and the heat of the sun.
