Jerry P. Carr

Jerry P. Carr, 70, White Sulphur Springs, WV, passed away July 23, 2024, his brother and children by his side.

He was born in White Sulphur Springs and lived there his entire life, attending elementary through middle school, and then high school at Greenbrier East. He was employed in the Greenbrier Valley for over 50 years. Jerry loved gospel and country music, singing in church since the age of 3, his strong voice evident even then; he taught himself to play guitar, and performed his music, until he became too ill to continue. One of his favorite songs was “Don’t Let the Old Man In” by Toby Keith, and he used its philosophy to endure his long illness.

He faced his health problems for the last decade with bravery and good humor, and he was a favorite of his healthcare providers because of his optimistic outlook, even as the challenges grew more dire. He loved to golf on many courses in the area with friends; he thought the Greenbrier Valley was the best place one could ever live and never considered leaving.

Surviving are two sons and two daughters, four grandchildren, three older sisters, one younger brother, nieces and nephews, one centenarian aunt, who lived nearby, and dozens of cousins.

The family would like to thank his friends who called, visited, and brought food during the difficult times, who spent time with him on the front porch and the golf course. They were invaluable to maintaining his spirits. None contributing to his care gave more than his constant companion, in the throes of illness and in times happier, than his brother, Johnny, selfless and dedicated always. He loved his medical caregivers in Low Moor, Roanoke, and Fairlea, and the family is grateful for their dedication.

A memorial service for Jerry will be 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at The Schoolhouse Hotel in White Sulphur Springs.
