    1924– 100 Years Ago

    New Bank At Rainelle

    The new First National Bank of East Rainelle, organized by C. H. Thompson, president of the Ronceverte National Bank and associates has been officially authorized to open for business. Ground will be broken toward the erection of a modern banking building with the newest interior fittings and vault equipment of unusual proportions and appointments for a town the size of East Rainelle.

    Beetles

    Miss Margaret Smith, of Philadelphia, arrived here last Sunday by motor to spend a vacation with her parents. Miss Smith says the beetle has killed nearly all the crops in Pennsylvania and found the state line heavily guarded under a strict quarantine, the guards not permitting a flower or vegetable to cross the line.

    Alvon

    The annual picnic for Alvon Circuit was held near the Alvon pumping station in a beautiful rove through the courtesy of our “grand old man” Captain Mathews. It is estimated there were nearly a thousand people present. The tables groaned under the weight of good things to eat. Games were enjoyed by the children and several speeches were made.

    1949 – 75 Years Ago

    The Red Menace

    J. C. Shanklin of the Lewis Theatre, Lewisburg, has been fortunate in getting a key city run on “The Red Menace” an outspoken indictment of Communist infiltration into America. Produced behind closed doors and two years in research and the making into a motion picture. This picture has the hearty endorsement of leading churchmen of all denominations, civic leaders, and veteran groups.

    Physican Takes Up Duties

    Dr. Phillip W. Oden has arrived in Ronceverte to take up his duties as the associate head of the Greenbrier Valley Hospital. He has been chief surgeon at the Oak Hill hospital and recently acquired an interest in the Greenbrier Valley Hospital, replacing Dr. H. D. Gunning, retired .

    McLaughlin Shows Them

    Second Lt. Dorothea L. McLaughlin went all the way from  the West Virginia hills to Lackland Field in Texas to show the men of the Air Force how to use a carbine. She scored 183 out of a possible 200 to place second for a rating of expert. She was beaten by one man in the matches held the day before graduation. She is the daughter of Sheriff and Mrs. Frank McLaughlin of Marlinton.

    1974– 50 Years Ago

    Ford Takes Office

    Gerald R. Ford intoned the solemn oath today as 38th President of the United States.  As Ford swore his brief oath, the American presidency changed hands to shed itself of scandal. Nixon’s resignation was necessary to avoid his certain removal from office by Congress. The new president, an unsullied and plain-speaking Midwesterner, assumed awesome power that he never sought.

    Moore Submitted To VP List

    Gov. Arch Moore said today his name has been submitted to Pres. Ford for consideration as his vice presidential nominee. “I feel stongly that I have my hands full here in West Virginia – yet when the President asks, very few people refuse to respond to it, the governor said.

    Lewisburg To Be Designated

    American Revolution Bicentennial Administration has named the city of Lewisburg and the counties of Brooke, Marion and Monongahela to receive bicentennial designation. U. S. Senator Jennings Randolph said that a celebration will be held  in Lewisburg commemorating the famous march of the Virginia Colonial Troops to Point Pleasant for the Battle of Point Pleasant, commonly referred to as the First Battle of the American Revolution.

    1999– 25 Years Ago

    Jet Damaged In Collision With Deer

    The take-off of a Beech jet had to be aborted after a deer darted on to the runway at Greenbrier Valley Airport causing damage to the aircraft and killing the deer. Airport Jerry O’Sullivan said instances of animals making their way onto the runway are rare at the airport but remarked that it does happen occasionally. O’Sullivan noted that as a safety measure, a fence is in place to help keep animals off the runway.

    Police Confiscate Marijuana

    West Virginia State Police confiscated 20 full-grown marijuana plants from a rural area located along Route 219 between Frankford and Renick. The plants were located on three or four different plots, and have a street value of approximately $40,000. Trooper D. L. Bowles said the plants survived the recent drought. “I guess that happens when you water something everday,” he commented.
