WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. (WVDN) — Employees of The Greenbrier Hotel Corporation could face a loss of health insurance due to the company’s alleged failure to pay required contributions, according to a letter reportedly sent to staff.

The letter, obtained by The West Virginia Daily News from an employee who wished to remain anonymous, claims to be from Schulte Roth & Zabel LLC, representing the Amalgamated National Health Fund, also known as the Health Fund. It states that The Greenbrier is four months overdue on payments to the Health Fund, totaling $2.4 million. The letter specifies that part of the delinquent amount includes funds that were deducted from employees’ paychecks for health insurance but were not forwarded to the Health Fund.

The letter warns that unless the outstanding amount is paid by August 27, all employees will lose their “health and welfare coverage.” The given date, August 27, is also the date the Greenbrier is scheduled to be auctioned to satisfy debts.

Additionally, the notice states that a further $1.2 million will be due soon.

The Greenbrier Hotel Corporation has not yet responded to requests for comment on the situation.

According to a press release from the Greenbrier Council of Labor, officials are “heartbroken and disappointed to learn that The Greenbrier Hotel despite its contractual and legal obligation to do so, has become severely delinquent to our Health Insurance carrier (Amalgamated National Health Fund). The press release also states, “Our members have met their obligation by working hard every day and paying their portion to the Greenbrier. The Greenbrier has neglected its obligation to its employees.”

The press release ends by saying, “The GCLU and its affiliated Unions are pursuing every legal option at our disposal to seek a quick and just resolution for the Greenbrier employees that have been wronged.”
