    Julia Riggs Day

Julia Riggs Day departed this world peacefully on July 16, 2024, for her next great adventure with God, family, and friends.

Born on September 4, 1930, in Huntington, WV, she was a daughter of Lewis Jefferson Riggs and Geraldine Morrison Riggs. Julia was preceded in death by her husbands, Robert G. Cabell, Jr. and John W. Day; and her loving sister, Francis Hundley Nalle.

She is survived by her six children, Robert G. Cabell, III (Nancy), Carrington Cabell Dugger, Temple W. Cabell (Susan), Anne Morrison Cabell (Patrick), Ji G. Buford, Rebecca W. Day (John); her nine grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.

Julia was raised in Richmond, VA, where she attended Saint Catherine’s School, playing field hockey and tennis. She graduated from Saint Margaret’s School in Tappahannock. Upon her second marriage to John Day, a civil engineer, her life with family took off. She made homes in Ohio; West Virginia; Richmond; Puebla, Mexico; Monterrey, Mexico; Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela, where she had the esteemed privilege of having lunch with Mother Theresa; and San Antonio, Texas. The last years of her life were spent in Lewisburg, WV, with her daughter, Carrington.

Julia’s life was dedicated to her children and grandchildren, who will lovingly remember her as, “Nanie.” She was happiest when everyone gathered for family reunions, birthdays, holidays (especially making eggnog or Texas sours), where she could catch up with everyone sharing their various stages in life.

She was always up for adventure, may it be riding mules for several months looking for a silver mine in Mexico, crewing a 65’ yacht from Norfolk to Charleston, white water rafting on her 80th birthday, riding elephants, piling children into her station wagon while going to Florida for spring break. She loved preparing a traditional meal for others, but often times ate her ice cream first. Nanie was the life of the party and always had a trick up her sleeve to keep everyone on their toes!

Her warm smile and laughter touched and warmed so many souls. Her greatest gift was the gift of love. Over many years, she volunteered for the Red Cross Disaster Relief. So much of her life was dedicated to giving to others. Julia lived an incredible life, and her memory will always be carried in the souls of those she touched.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Red Cross in Julia’s name.
