GREENBRIER COUNTY W.Va. (WVDN) – What began 18 years ago as a memorial run has become an annual tradition that not only serves as a remembrance but has also raised $300,000 in scholarship money for local schools. The 18th annual Lindsey Raines Memorial Scholarship Poker Run is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 7. Registration is $30 and will begin at 9 a.m. at Spare Time Sports Bar and Grille in Lewisburg, West Virginia. Breakfast will be served from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., but participants are free to begin their run at any time after registering. The run will conclude with the last bike at 4 p.m. at The Rainelle Moose Lodge.

“I cannot stress enough that this event is not just for motorcycles,” says Paul Raines, who started the memorial in honor of his daughter Lindsey. “You do not have to own a motorcycle to participate. We also get cars and trucks,” he adds. Participants are helping to raise scholarship money for graduating seniors from local high schools that include Greenbrier West, which is the school that Lindsey attended, Greenbrier East, Meadow Bridge, Midland Trail, Pocahontas County and James Monroe.

This event will undoubtedly keep Lindsey Raines’ memory alive in both the community and the residents that the scholarship fund benefits. When asked what this means to the family, Paul Raines replied “It means a lot to my wife and I. The majority of our scholarship recipients have gone on to be productive members of society. We have police officers, doctors, lawyers, teachers, etc.,” Raines adds.

All registered participants receive a t-shirt, patch, door prize and evening meal. Door prizes, raffles and an auction will also take place.  The best hand wins $500 and the worst hand wins $250.  Routes and maps will be provided at registration. For more information, call Paul Raines at 304-438-7102 or Bruce Dowdy at 304-647-3155. If you are not able to participate but still wish to donate to the scholarship fund, you may do so by contacting Western Auto in Rainelle.
