CHARMCO- After a comeback attempt in week one fell short, the Greenbrier West Cavaliers left no doubt in week two as they controlled the Summers County Bobcats from beginning to end in an impressive 27-0 shutout victory on Friday, Sept. 6 at Cavalier Field.

West got on the board with 5:25 left in the opening quarter when quarterback Evan Vandall hit Brandon Poticher with a 12-yard touchdown pass. That made it 7-0 Cavs.

Then, just a few minutes later, Vandall found fellow backfield mate Issac Agee for a 31-yard scoring toss and just like that, the Cavaliers led 14-0.

    And Vandall wasn’t done.

Just three minutes before halftime and after some good defensive play from both sides in the second quarter, Vandall got loose on a 50-yard TD run that put Greenbrier West ahead 21-0. That score stayed the same until halftime.

The offense slowed down some after that for the rest of the night, but it was the special teams that picked up the slack early in the third when Agee returned a punt 44 yards to the house for a score and that ended the scoring.

The Cavalier defense played stingy the rest of the way as they did up to that point as well.

One of those contributors on defense, freshman defensive back Ben Butler, played in his first varsity home game and home win and is excited about his opportunity and how his team can grow from here.

“I’m honored, really,” Butler said of playing significant minutes as a freshman.

“Just got to be able to push and keep going and maybe one day I can be as good as C-Dub (CW Sturgell),” Butler added.

Speaking of Sturgell, the standout linebacker who has missed some time recently with an injury, he was back and made several big time plays for the Cavs defense that limited the Bobcats to just 230 total yards.

“It feels good, it’s a working process,” Sturgell said of being back healthy.

“I think it was good for me to get as any reps as I did tonight and now, I just have to come back and be even better next week,” the linebacker continued.

Vandall threw for 91 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 111 more and added another score as well. Agee had 66 total yards and a score and had the punt return TD. Asher Barclay had a long 36-yard catch.

For the Bobcats, Tyson Adkins ran 33 times for 145 yards.

As of now, Greenbrier West will head to Paden City this Friday night for their third game. However, there have been some unofficial rumblings that Paden City’s roster has been decimated by injuries, but as of now, the game is still on. The WVDN will provide updates as we receive them if anything should change.
