Local Doodle Artist Joyce Arbaugh Featured At Greenbrier Valley Visitors Center Through September

GREENBRIER COUNTY W.Va. (WVDN) – Art is a form of expression and one local artist is excited to share her vision with both residents and visitors of Greenbrier County. Ronceverte resident Joyce Arbaugh noticed at an early age that she had an interest in drawing but it wasn’t until her senior year of high school that she realized her interest had blossomed into an undeniable talent. “I started taking a serious interest in art during art class my senior year,” Arbaugh says.

Doodle art is a type of drawing, which can either be abstract or take shape in the form of recognizable images or figures. In Arbaugh’s case, she focuses primarily on animals. “One of my earliest pieces was an eagle,” she says. “I don’t really get inspired by any one thing – it’s just doodling. It’s a combination of drawing and calligraphy because it involves swirls, loops, circles and lines.” True to its name, doodle art can start without direction and gradually begin to evolve. “I remember once when I was working at the print shop and waiting for something to develop, I just started doodling and began to see it taking the shape of a lion,” Arbaugh recalls.

With a total of 55 pieces in her current collection, Arbaugh admits that most but not all of her art is currently displayed at the Greenbrier Valley Visitors Center in Lewisburg, West Virginia and will be throughout the month of September. “I don’t sell online, but I have done craft shows and everything currently on display at the visitors center is for sale,” Arbaugh says. “When you walk through the door facing Washington Street, my exhibit is on the left.” With prices ranging from $6 for a 5×7 to $29 for a fully matted and framed 8×10, this artist wants to make her art available to everyone and every budget. “The most you’re going to pay is $29,” she adds.

For those interested in meeting the artist behind the pen, Joyce Arbaugh will be on hand at the Greenbrier Valley Visitors Center this Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Her work is displayed in the gallery space as part of ‘Art in the Valley,’ which highlights different local artists each month.
