Marshall University and New River Community and Technical College Create Partnership Agreement

BEAVER, W.Va. (WVDN) – Marshall University and New River Community and Technical College (CTC), today officially signed an affiliation agreement that will expand educational opportunities for West Virginia students, while simultaneously preparing a better-prepared workforce for tomorrow.

The affiliation agreement eases the process for students graduating with associate degrees, offering them a clear pathway to continue their education at Marshall University, and also providing the framework for more collaboration between specific programs at the two institutions. The initiative is part of Marshall’s broader effort to update agreements with CTCs across the state, reinforcing its commitment to educational accessibility and workforce development.

“Today is a big step for both schools as we join forces to help students and build up the skills of West Virginia’s workforce,” said Marshall University President Brad D. Smith. “We’re committed to making education more accessible for everyone in our state and preparing a dynamic workforce primed for today’s economy.”

“New River CTC is dedicated to providing opportunities that help our students and the communities we serve,” said New River CTC President Dr. Bonny Copenhaver. “This partnership with Marshall University allows us to extend those opportunities, opening doors for our graduates to build upon the skills they’ve developed and continue their education seamlessly.”

Marshall’s new Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) degree allows community college graduates, who have earned an AAS degree, to complete a four-year degree without having to take additional general education classes. BAS students will develop new skill sets and practice those skills in their experiential learning placements.
